Mandated DOI and Special DOIU Training

Overview

DOI University staff members are working with Interior organizations to cooperatively develop training programs to meet mandated and other critical training needs. Whether you are interested in classroom or online training, or a solution that blends the two, we will work with you to develop a customized approach that meets your needs.

The following are brief descriptions of special training programs developed in cooperation with various Interior organizations, with links to more information or to access these training resources. You can browse through the descriptions or click on one of the links below to go directly to the description of a program.

Classroom Training

Project Management Training

Project management has been identified by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the General Accounting Office as a critical success factor for managing information technology (IT) investments and obtaining funding approvals. This training reflects Interior's commitment to provide certified project managers for all major IT projects and investments. Participants who complete a series of courses may qualify for a Project Management Associates Certificate or Masters Certificate from George Washington University or can use the series to prepare for project management certification from the Professional Management Institute. The first two classes in the series have been offered in Denver and Washington, DC. Additional classes will be offered in the future, pending guidance from OMB and Interior's Office of the Chief Information Officer. For more information, call the Washington or Denver Learning Centers.

Customized Online Training

DOI Safety and Occupational Health Online Training Series
The DOI Safety and Occupational Health Online Training Series offers online courses on specific safety and health topics. This training is sponsored by the Department's Safety and Occupational Health Council and the Office of Occupational Health and Safety, and is available to Interior employees free of charge. The courses provide information on legislative authorities designed to protect workers, identify safety and health resources, and familiarize executives, supervisors, collateral duty safety program coordinators, and employees with their roles and responsibilities in creating and maintaining an environment in keeping with the Department of the Interiorís safety motto, "Safety First, Every Job, Every Time."

Each Interior bureau is announcing mandatory training requirements and the availability of this training on its own schedule. To see the requirements for your organization, go to http://www.doiu.nbc.gov/safety/. For each occupational health and safety curriculum, there is bureau-specific information as well as a brief description and a listing of the courses included in the curriculum. If there is no specific curriculum for your organization, your bureau has not yet announced its occupational safety and health training program. Any DOI employee can view the general Departmental Occupational Safety and Health Courses and access those courses by logging into DOI LEARN.

For training related to aviation safety, go to http://iat.nifc.gov . For general questions about safety or the content of these courses, contact your bureau Safety and Occupational Health Council member.

This web-based training product explains the importance of information systems security and covers topics which include: threats and vulnerabilities, malicious code, user responsibilities and new developments affecting information systems security.

This course is mandatory for all Department of the Interior employees on a yearly basis and can be accessed through DOI LEARN.

Multimedia Online Training

DOIU has partnered with other bureaus and offices within DOI to create multimedia training in CD-ROM or web-based format that provides the user with video, PowerPoint slides and text transcript in a lively, interactive setting.

Conflict Management Awareness Training, developed jointly with the DOI Office of Collaborative Action and Dispute Resolution, provides users with a greater understanding of the benefits of using alternative dispute resolution and collaborative processes. The presentation defines terms that are critical to understanding conflict management, and describes when these processes should, and should not be used. In short, it explains how effective conflict management can help further the mission of your organization. For more information or to receive a copy of this training on CD-ROM, please call the Office of Collaborative Action and Dispute Resolution at 202-327-5383.
