The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a non-regulatory federal agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce whose mission is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life.
Two of the seven divisions of the Information Technology Lab at NIST are the Applied Cybersecurity and the Computer Security Divisions, which are specifically charged with the mission to improve information systems security by:
- Raising awareness of IT risks, vulnerabilities and protection requirements, particularly for new and emerging technologies;
- Researching, studying, and advising agencies of IT vulnerabilities, ensuring cost-effective security practices and privacy of sensitive federal systems;
- Developing standards, metrics, tests and validation programs including measuring and validating security in systems and services and to establish minimum security requirements for federal systems; and
- Collaborating across government, industry, and academia through outreach and the application of standards and best practices necessary to implement and adopt practical cybersecurity capabilities.
