THE FISH HATCHERY WAS BUILT IN 1966 TO SUPPORT TRIBAL FISHERIES PROGRAMS IN NEW MEXICO AND ARIZONA

UNTIL 1999 THE HATCHERY WAS OPERATED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR, FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE.

THE FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE RETURNED THE COMPLEX TO THE MESCALERO IN 2000.  THAT’S WHEN THE SOUTHWESTERN TRIBAL FISHERIES COMMISSION WAS CREATED AND HAS WORKED IN CONCERT WITH THE MESCALERO APACHE TRIBE TO REOPEN AND OPERATE THE HATCHERY.

SINCE 2000 THE HATCHERY HAS OPERATED CONTINUALLY AND IS TRANSITIONING FROM A SPRING AND SUMMER OPERATION TO A YEAR-ROUND EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE CENTER.

THROUGH THIS WORKING/LEARNING EXPERIENCE THE NATIVE AMERICAN YOUTH GAIN A NEW APPRECIATION FOR THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTAINING THE DELICATE BALANCE OF NATURE. 

CURRENTLY THE U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE IS FUNDING THE SUMMER PROGRAM.

WITH SUPPORT FROM PROGRAMS, SUCH AS THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR COOPERATIVE EDUCATION, AND THE YOUTH CONSERVATION CORPS, COLLEGE INTERNS, AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SPEND LONG, REWARDING HOURS OPERATING AND MAINTAINING THE HATCHERY AS WELL AS STOCKING LAKES, IMPROVING TROUT HABITAT, ANGLER ACCESS AND CONSERVATION PROJECTS.

PROVIDE NUMEROUS SERVICES TO TRIBAL WATERS THROUGHOUT THE SOUTHWEST.

HOSTING A FISH HATCHERY THAT SERVES THE SOUTHWESTERN U.S. IS A SOURCE OF EXTREME PRIDE FOR THE MESCALERO APACHE.

FIRE AND SUBSEQUENT FLOODING BRINGING TONS OF ASH INTO THE HATCHERY, RESULTING IN 100% FISH KILL, WHERE THE REASONS WHY THE FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE WERE FORCED TO CLOSE THE FACILITY. 

SIMILAR EVENTS IN 2004 AND 2008 CAUSED DEVASTATING LOSSES TO THE HATCHERY, HOWEVER THIS TIME THE HATCHERY DID NOT CLOSE. 

EVEN THROUGH ADVERSITY THE HATCHERY REMAINED OPEN THROUGH THE COMMITMENT OF TRIBAL YOUTH.
