FPM 234 -Applied Leadership in Projects and Programs

This course provides the foundation for leadership which is critical to the success of all high-performing program and project managers and satisfies the leadership performance outcomes necessary for the Federal Acquisition Certification for Program and Project Managers (FAC-P/PM) at the mid-level. In today's federal environment, project managers must demonstrate leadership and build high-performing project teams in creative and innovative ways. Leaders use influence and power to develop strategic partnerships. They manage conflict, make decisions, and develop team members' competency ina way that drives a team to achieve project goals. Leadership is critical to the success of high-performing program and project managers. The ability to not just manage, but lead a project is the differentiator in the realization of career goals and attaining the mission of the agency. This course explores key leaderships skills including building high-performing project teams, building networks and professional alliances, managing conflicts, making decisions, developing team members, and demonstrating creativity and innovation. The course will introduce topics to demonstrate understanding of vital skills of influencing and negotiating with others in order to minimize/manage conflict and to create a partnering spirit with other stakeholders; Team-building skills and the need to take an active role in the development of others; Political savvy; Strategic thinking; External awareness; Decisiveness; Creativity and innovation, and Entrepreneurship. This course involves the participants in the development of the traits and behaviors associated with each of the skills and in the discussion of the importance of each of the skills.
